About The Overfit
This blog is where I think out loud. I write to work out what I actually believe, not to grow an audience.
The name comes from machine learning, where a model can become so tuned to its training data that it fails on anything new. I notice the same failure in my own thinking, and in how people reason about technology, work, and each other: ideas that sound right until they meet a case they were never fit to. Writing is how I catch it.
What you’ll find here
Whatever I’m currently trying to understand. Often that’s the gap between how a system is meant to behave and how it actually does, whether the system is technical, organizational, or social. Recurring threads: cutting through AI hype toward what actually ships, the limits of simple rules, and decisions made under real constraints.
No schedule and no funnel. Pieces appear when a thought is worth finishing.

I’m Jan Philip Göpfert, based in Bielefeld, Germany. My background is in machine learning research, and my work is taking research-grade ML and making it survive contact with production. I’m most interested in where designed behavior and real behavior diverge.
